We have tried a number of recovery programs over the years with varying results, none of which were satisfying for me as a pastor. Then we were introduced to Freedom Session in 2004, tried it, and found that the program very effective. I believe that Freedom Session should be available for everyone, not just addicts. It is the best program that we have come across.

Freedom Session: Stand Strong... Walk in Truth
Introduction
An Overview of Freedom Session

Ken & Bonnie DyckFreedom Session is an effective, Christ-centered 12 Step healing ministry that will lead you on a journey towards the freedom and healing you've always hoped was possible for you.

While most people refer to Freedom Session as a Christian recovery program, it really goes much deeper than recovery - our goal is healing and we are convinced this is God's desire for your life as well.

Freedom Session has been proven effective to help people from every walk of life, every economic level and virtually, every possible area of woundedness.  People like you have been set free from chemical and sexual addiction, sexual and physical abuse victimization, codependency issues, perfectionism, the scars of divorce, betrayal, abortion trauma, homosexuality, anger issues, gambling, eating disorders, frozen emotions and just plain old hurts.

If you can relate to any of these issues or love someone struggling in these areas, we invite you to spend a few minutes perusing our site and find the courage to start your own personal freedom journey.  Life is simply too short to be lived out while enslaved to our past hurts and unhealthy habits.

If you are already ministering hurting people from a Christian worldview, you are definitely on the right track.  But we need to do more than tell others about Jesus and the freedom He offers.  We need to patiently walk them through a process, showing them how to invite Jesus into their pain and how to deal with their pasts in such a way as to break the cycles of abuse, escape and dysfunction.  Freedom Session has also been written for you and will equip for more effective ministry.  It is transferable, user friendly and comes complete with DVD teaching support so that you can start a Freedom Session Ministry in your community and watch the miracles begin. (see Purchase Materials for pricing and packages)

A Freedom Session 12 Step Experience

Freedom Session is divided into three 9 week segments, each with a user-friendly Participant's Guide.  A typical Freedom Session meeting begins with a practical large group teaching (taught live or by Ken & Bonnie on DVD) and then separates into gender specific small groups to discuss what was just taught at a deeper level.  Then, during the week, participants complete an "On Your Own" homework assignment to further apply what they're learning. (see Session 02 Participant's Guide sampler).

The following graph explain the process and emotional experience of the 12 Step journey through Freedom Session.

Materials Samplers
Below are four (4) samples from Freedom Session 02 (Participant's Guide 1) for potential participants and FS Directors to get a feel for the quality of our materials and how they work together.  To get the full experience, read over the following directions and follow the instructions, or you can simply click on any of the samplers.

If you are interested in taking Freedom Session as a participant:

  1. Open and print off the Session 02 Participant's Guide Sampler and then listen to the Session 02 audio teaching.  You can fill in the blanks as you go.
  2. Then complete the Further Reflection questions on page 23 of the Session 02 Participant Guide Sampler and look over the small group experience discussion questions on page 24.  This is why we recommend you find a Freedom Session community or invite a few friends to join you on the journey.  You've been hurt in the context of relationship.  Your healing will best come in the context of relationship.
  3. Finally, take the time to complete the homework questions on pages 25-27.  This will give you the full Freedom Session experience, at least for one session.

You can also watch the Session 02 DVD sampler (what you would receive if purchasing Freedom Session on DVD) but we've only included a short segment.

If you are interested in starting a FS Ministry in your area:

  1. Open and print off the Session 02 Participant's Guide Sampler and then open the Teaching Scripts Sampler and compare.  You will notice 3 unique teaching aids:
    • A Director's Briefing (pages 2-3).  This is for you.
    • A Facilitator's Briefing (pages 20-21).  You would photocopy this for each facilitator in advance of the session to help them prepare.
    • A color coded script for those teaching live.  The code is explained on Session 02 Teaching Script Sampler cover page.

Please note: Teaching Scripts, Director & Facilitator briefings, PowerPoint support and other soft copy resources are all included in the FS Director Kit.
  2. Watch the Session 02 DVD sampler and follow along in your Session 02 Participant's Guide and Teaching Script Sampler.  This will give you a pretty good overview of the teaching whether you run it via DVD or teach live.
  3. Finally, you can skim through the Session 02 audio teaching, and skim over the rest of the Participant's Guide Sampler, comparing the Small Group Experience (page 24 in the Participant's Guide Sampler) with the Facilitator Briefing from pages 20-21 in the Teaching Scripts Sampler.

How Freedom Session Began

In 2001, the church where I [pastor ken] came on staff had just experienced an incredible growth wave over an 18 month period.  The new people coming were not healthy Christians from other churches.  They were hurting, some were internally bleeding under the scars of undealt with sexual abuse or neglect.  Many were enslaved to pornography and various forms of immorality.  Some were suffering through broken marriages.  Others will simply broken themselves.  And all were desperately hoping that the message of freedom in Christ that they heard about on Sunday mornings would be true in their lives as well.

We soon found out that we couldn't handle the counseling load following messages that dealt with the real issues of life.  We tried various approaches to help people find freedom, but discovered their issues were most often only a symptom of deeper and often buried wounds from people's developmental years.  We needed something that probed deeper into the hearts of those who came seeking help.  Long story short, in fall of 2003, Freedom Session was written.  And as people began experiencing the healing/freedom Jesus promises, the ministry began to grow.  Eventually other churches began asking to start Freedom Session in their churches so we published the 1st edition of Participant's Guides and teaching DVDs in 2005.  We've learned a few things over the years and released an updated and re-filmed version teaching in fall 2009.

Freedom Session has developed a reputation of being one of the most extensive (toughest) Christian 12 Step programs available.  We have also seen many find lasting freedom and healing.  In my opinion, there are four reasons for this:

  1. Freedom and healing is God's idea, not ours.  The power we rely on is that we've kept true to God's Word and not compromised the teaching of Jesus to be politically or recovery culture correct.  Just to be clear:  programs like this don't heal anyone - Jesus Christ does.  The role of Freedom Session is to lead you on a journey of uncovering the wounds Jesus wants you to bring to Him.  We have no doubt He will heal you.
  2. Freedom Session is transferable. Our goal in publishing Freedom Session was to make it "dummy proof" - like the digital cameras available today.  We have personally invested time and money into the 2009 edition so that anyone who is truly authentic, loves broken people and believes in the healing power of Jesus Christ can run the program via DVD even if they don't have a teaching gift or recovery background.  At the same time, those who have a teaching gift and/or experience in recovery ministry can teach the program live - teaching scripts, PowerPoint and briefings are all available.
  3. Freedom Session is pastor and user friendly.  I [Ken] am a pastor and I know how important it is to have a program that is solidly biblical and trustworthy, that won't lead volunteers in and over their heads.  During our re-writing, I kept in mind that many of the volunteers facilitating the program will still need a measure of healing themselves.  There is a measure of "safety" built into every session, especially in the small group discussion.  In the Facilitator Training we emphasize that the role of a facilitator is not to counsel or fix but to lead participants through the program as written in the context of community.  In this way, Freedom Session actually becomes one of the most effective "leadership training engines" in the church.
  4. Freedom Session is designed for those who actually want to become well. Regular attendance and weekly homework for each participant is expected.  Those who want to "play at recovery" or remain encased in a victim mentality sometimes drop out but those who are willing to put a little effort eventually complete the program and experience permanent life change.  Those who drop out often return the following year after seeing the difference Freedom Session has made in the lives of their friends.

About the Author

ken_and_bonnie-BakerGrowing Up: Ken grew up the youngest of three boys in a lower middle class home in central Canada.  He had a good childhood until age 12 when his family moved cities mid-way his grade 7 school year.  His first day of school, everyone seemed to want to beat up the new kid, and since he was slight in stature, he made a conscious decision to protect himself by becoming a leader among them.  In his own 12 year old words:  I'll never become stronger than them;  so I'll become "badder."

He began hanging out with kids older than he, joyriding in stolen cars, breaking into schools and houses, vandalism and drugs.  Fortunately for Ken, he didn't like the drugs - he felt out of control.  But the peer pressure was heavy and so he attempted to "rise to the top" by selling drugs.  He actually sold as little as possible but as much as necessary to keep up his image.

...the road leading to death. But all along, Ken knew the direction he was heading was a dead end.  He was empty inside and began to drink quite heavily.  By age 17, Ken kept a bottle of whiskey in his car, slipping out of school throughout the day for a quick shot.  He was rarely a "fall down drunk."  In fact, few people knew he drank as much as he did.  He liked that perpetual "numb" feeling that helped to mask the emptiness in his heart and sense of purposelessness of his life.

By age 19, Ken was a confirmed alcoholic - but for his age, a relatively successful and popular one.  He had a great job, friends, he excelled in sports, etc. and sang/played guitar in rural bars on the weekends.  One night in 1980 at 2:00 AM, after drinking heavily, he exited a freeway on his motorcycle and came to a red light.  As he waited for the light to turn green, he realized that he didn't know where he had been or where he was going. And at that moment, he saw the truth in what his friends had been trying to tell him for the past six months.  He was an alcoholic.  What he once thought he could control now controlled him and it frightened him to death.

At that point, Ken did what all good alcoholics do - he drank more.  He remembers the loneliest moments of his life being the last 10 minutes of each day, just before falling asleep.  He used to actually time his drinking so that he was just drunk enough that he'd pass out the moment he hit the pillow without the room spinning.

It was during those last 10 minutes of daily consciousness that he was forced to face himself; and from that, he found no escape!  But it was another six months before Ken would hit "rock bottom."

...the road leading to life. It was again at around 2:00 AM.  This time he was alone in a park.  Both of his arms were in a sling; but he can't remember why.  He does remember picking up a six pack after the bar closed.  And drinking alone in the park, he saw the cross of a church a ways off.

He'd seen that cross before, but he'd always fought with God.  At that point in his life, he'd rather have died than admit to God, or anyone else, that he needed help.

But that night, the fight was all over and Ken threw his beer bottle against a pole and cried out to God with three simple words: "OK, take it!" meaning his life.  And on that day, Ken met his Higher Power personally.  His Higher Power was Jesus Christ.

Still drunk, Ken climbed into his truck and went to sleep!  But when he awoke the next morning, something was different.

For the first time in his teen/adult life that he can remember, he felt unconditional love.  Oh, he had been loved by his parents and by others.  He just didn't feel the love unless he was doing something significant.  The second thing he intuitively knew was that from that point on, his life had meaning and a purpose.  He wasn't exactly sure what it was at the moment and, frankly, he didn't care.  That sense of meaning and purpose has never left him since.

Shortly thereafter, Ken was introduced to a 12 Step program.  He knew life was unmanageable.  His best thinking had not served him well.  He found courage as he embraced step 2 where He came to believe that a power greater than himself could restore him to sanity. But he ran into a problem when he came up to Step 3: and made a conscious decision to turn his will and his life over to the care of God as he understood Him.

The way Ken saw it, the concept of God, by definition, suggested that somewhere out there is the highest God, the top God.  He wasn't looking for any old higher power.  He wanted one that he could know and relate to personally.

Shortly after that realization, Ken dropped out of the 12 step program.  His girlfriend at the time, now his wife Bonnie, stood by his side and encouraged him to get involved in the church they attended.  They also became engaged and married in the summer of 1983.

Ken's recovery journey took a different twist than most.  For the next few years, he worked hard and excelled as a self-taught marine mechanic.  In his and Bonnie's spare time, they led a youth group of church and community kids.  Eventually, they sold most of what they had, and along with their 1st child, went off to Bible College where he graduated four years later with 3 kids and a Bachelors Degree.

FULL TIME MINISTRY: In 1991, he and his young family moved to the West Coast to become a youth pastor and later moved into a Senior Pastor role.  In 1996, he and his wife left the security of that position and began a Saturday night church for unchurched young adults in the heart of the city.  In 1999, he accepted an Executive Pastor role in an established and larger city church with a reputation for reaching out to the broken in our society.  The idea of a healing or recovery ministry didn't enter his mind until 2001 when he was asked to lead like-minded volunteers to begin a faith-based recovery ministry for his church and surrounding community.

FREEDOM SESSION IS BORN: Six months later they began with 22 participants, 11 of which became the first graduates.  Ken found himself re-writing most of the recovery program they were using, making it more practical and a greater emphasis on interacting personally with God through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.  After he had re-written over 50% of the material, in fall of 2003, he went back to the drawing board and wrote an entirely different 32 week program called Freedom Session.  In 2005, he wrote and self-published the Participant's Guides and captured the teaching segments live on DVD so that other groups could run the program without having a qualified recovery teacher on site.

In 2009, he and Bonnie condensed, revised and re-filmed the program and released the 2009 edition across Canada and into the US.

Freedom Session is unique among many Christian recovery programs in that its goal is not recovery, but healing.  Ken and Bonnie believe we all have at least one chosen drug of choice that we use to escape or numb our pain.  Freedom Session forces us to face that pain/hurt and bring it into the healing presence of Jesus Christ.

Freedom Session International - the charity arm of Freedom Session - was also established in 2009 and is committed to equipping churches/ministries in Canada and around the world to more effectively minister to the broken, the addicted and afflicted.

Ken & Bonnie are taking an extended "sabbatical" through spring of  2010 during which they will be ministering to churches, pastors and leaders across Canada who are wanting to more effectively minister to the hurting among us.  Eventually Ken & Bonnie's plans are to re-enter pastoral ministry as a Lead Pastor couple of a mid to large sized church.

I know God is using Freedom Session to change lives, Ken says.  And that's good enough for me.  If I died tomorrow, God would still continue to use the principles and truths within it to heal and restore lives.  Hurting people don't need me and they don't need Freedom Session.  What they do need is a life-transforming interaction with their Creator.  Freedom Session will help lead them on that journey - a journey of freedom and healing.                                                  - pastor ken b. dyck
