Starting Freedom Session in Your Location:
Starting Freedom Session is much easier than you might think. The entire program has been captured on DVD, taught live by my wife and I in 2009. We realize that not all churches are able to assign staff to run such a ministry. For this reason we have published Freedom Session in a transferable and usable format. You don't need experience in all the areas of recovery. You don't need a teaching gift and your church does not need a separate ministry for every different area of recovery. In fact, our experience has been that we all have one or more "drugs of choice" we use to numb our pain. By inviting all the areas of recovery together with Jesus as our Higher Power, we really do experience an equality of sorts and have discovered an authentic healing environment that we have not experienced anywhere else.
That being said, we've learned a few things along the way (from others and often by simply doing it wrong ourselves) that will greatly assist you as you begin this new and exciting ministry.
Freedom Session runs best when it is led by a called team of men/women who love Jesus, believe in the healing work of the Holy Spirit and are authentic about their own journey. We are trusting you are one of these people. If so, read on.
90 Days to a Successful Launch (this is the ideal; adjust as necessary)

This year, we are offering three stategic ministry/leadership training seminars. Whenever possible, we encourage you to take them in sequence.
LET US train your ministry teams!!! |
Level 2 FS Training: "Prayer Ministry" (aka prayer counseling)
REGISTRATION UPDATE: I've just been informed that we have two additional rooms opening up for the training (space for 4-6 depending on gender/couples, etc). First paid, first served.
If you are interested in these spots, we suggest you register yourself/your group on line as any additional rooms will be assigned in the order paid registrations are received. If you register and the additional rooms have already been taken, your registration payment will be refunded (in full) to your credit card.
November 4-6 2011: This seminar will be offered in a complete weekend retreat (Friday 6 PM to Sunday 2PM) @ Cedar Springs, Sumas WA and will include some additional teaching on spiritual warfare. $140/person paid on/before Oct 20. $150/person if paid Oct 21 - Oct 30.
- This 10 hour level 2 intensive training seminar (Friday - Saturday) is a practical synthesis of various prayer ministry/counseling models that will equip faithful Christ followers to lead others to experience spiritual and emotional healing from traumatic memories and events. (note: full weekend seminar includes three meals on Saturday and a Sunday brunch. Additional teaching / ministry time on Sunday morning will be included in the weekend format.)
-
You will be given a theological foundation for prayer ministry and leave with a proven prayer ministry process through which you invite the Holy Spirit to minister to an individual as Counselor and Healer.
-
This course is STRONGLY recommended for FS Facilitators, pastors and lay persons involved in pastoral care. Class size will be limited and will include practicum experience. New for 2011, this training will be open to mature believers who've not completed FS or Level 1 training.
(please note: This is a "Level 2" or "advanced" training seminar. Freedom Session International reserves the right to restrict participation at our discretion. Typically, serving under the leadership/authority of a FSIM recognized local church or ministry is a key requirement. A full refund will be granted to any registrations not accepted.)
-
this seminar will also be offered in Yellowknife, NWT on Jan 20-21, 2012.

Level 3 FS Training: Basic Deliverance
taught by Pastor ken b. dyck, author of Freedom Session.
fall 2011 dates TBA
This course begins with the basics of demonology and deliverance and is based on a belief that Jesus expected all spiritually mature believers to exercise authority over evil spirits and be capable of casting them out. The goal of this course is to de-mystify the ministry of deliverance, take away the fear of the demonic and equip believers to systematically discern and cast out the majority of demonic spirits without getting in over their heads.
For Freedom Session facilitators, this is considered Advanced Facilitator Training Level 3.
- Session 01: Demonology 101: Understanding the Basics - part 1
- Session 02: Demonology 101: Understanding the Basics - part 2
- Session 03: Preparation & Pre-requisites for Effective Deliverance
- Session 04: Using a "Deliverance Inventory Tool" to accurately discern the roots
- Session 05: Settling Authority (and other practical) Issues
Location: Pacific Life Bible College (15100 66A Avenue, Surrey, BC) Cost: $90/person, $40/Bible College or Seminary student
early registration: $75/person, $30/Bible College or Seminary student
our fall 2010 course filled up quickly.
Watch for fall 2011 dates in BC Light magazine.
Note: registration is transferable but not refundable. Class size will be limited.
Why take this course?
Anyone or any church that embraces a healing ministry (like FS) will eventually come face to face with the demonic. Sometimes the encounters will be obvious. Other times those we minister to will experiece a subtle spiritual attack - confusion, clouding of the mind, extreme fear or depression. At times you may come under demonic attack yourself. Often these attacks can be defeated by prayer, quoting Scripture or by choosing to believe/declare God's truth over satan's lies. But sometimes a power encounter is needed. And when it is, there are few people in churches (including many pastors) trained to effectively deal with demonic forces.

Freedom Session in Recovery Homes |
|
Freedom Session is well suited for resident recovery home ministry and needs very little "tweaking" to make it effective.
Our suggestions are as follows.
- Peruse the Facilitator Training DVDs in the FS Director Kit and decide which ones will be helpful for your staff. I think they would all be helpful. The Step Meeting outline taught in the Training DVD - Session 5 Going Deeper might be especially helpful. The Going Deeper Facilitator Briefings (back of Sessions 03, 06, 10, 14 & 19 teaching scripts) may also be helpful.
- Run whichever chapters from the Session 00 DVD you feel would be most beneficial. Even though you are likely making FS a mandatory part of your program, this gives me an opportunity to build a relationship with them by sharing my testimony. This will be important later on if you are running the program via DVD.
- Change the schedule/calendar sampler included on your Master DATA CD in the FS Director Kit. The ideal schedule would be to complete 2 sessions each week over 4 meeting times. Below is a Monday - Friday suggested schedule I encourage you to consider.
- Monday morning:
- Freedom Session teaching (taught live or on DVD)
- Coffee break
- Session small group experience but don't discuss the Step/homework. Spend your time more thoroughly answering the Small group questions. (place a counselor/staff member in each group to keep discussion moving and effective.)
- Tuesday early afternoon:
- Group therapy session: have your group counselor pick through the best Step/homework questions for residents to discuss and work through in a group setting. I am assuming your counselors will be well skilled in selecting appropriate questions. Groups should be no more than 6 and remain consistent.
- We are suggesting the group therapy session occurs Tuesday afternoon to give residents ample time to complete the Step/homework in advance which may take them 1-2 hours to complete.
- Once you get to the Step 4 Moral Inventory Step/homework, you will need to be a little more careful with the group therapy questions. Note: residents should be encouraged to complete their Step 5 Confessions with a staff counselor or chaplain.
- Wednesday:
- no Freedom Session activity
residents can follow up on any other homework assigned in group therapy
- Thursday morning:
- Friday early afternoon:
- Group therapy session: same as Tuesday afternoon.
If you represent a recovery home where funding is an issue, we encourage you to apply for co-sponsorship through Freedom Session International. |

Freedom Session "Inside" (Prison Ministry) |
|
Freedom Session will also work well in Canadian federal and American State prisons where the inmates serve longer sentences. In shorter term prison facilities where sentences are less than 2 years we have found the average time an inmate actually serves is between 3 and 6 months. With short term inmates, we suggest you only use Participant's Guide (Sessions 00 - 09).
Freedom Session "inside" can run very much the same as in the residential recovery home except you will need to be more sensitive to the meeting schedule the administration offers you. You will also have to watch for participants who are just going through the motions, looking for leniency in their probation application.
Ideally, "FS inside" would be directed by a Christian Prison Chaplain who cares about the inmates and would know how to customize the program to the setting.
The greatest concern inmates often have is in writing information down as it may incriminate them later. Suggest that they write sensitive information in a code form (initials, etc) that will not create problems for them or others if their books were confiscated.
Group discussion questions through the homework questions (led by a chaplain or qualified group therapist) also work well.
The ideal schedule would be very much like the resident recovery home schedule. We have seen FS work well via DVD and taught live. Obviously, the live teaching is better because it can be slanted towards a single gender but it is not always easy finding someone with a strong teaching gift willing to teach in prison.
If you would like to bring Freedom Session into a prison near you, we encourage you to talk to the pastoral staff at your church and/or your local missions department and obtain their support. In certain situations, co-sponsorship through Freedom Session International may be available if your local church is unable to help you. We prayerfully consider all inquiries. |
